In an apparatus for machining the edge of the end, the size of an intermediate portion having a rounded edged portion in the direction of the thickness is optically detected by irradiating illumination light on the edge surface of the end of a machined plate material from a plurality of diagonal directions along the edge surface. At the same time, the position of one plate surface and the other plate surface at the end of the machined plate material are detected. The thickness of the end of the machined plate material is calculated based on the detected results. Then, the machining state at the edge of the end is discriminated based on the thickness value, and an alarm is displayed or given based on the discriminated results.
