Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a tape width-measuring apparatus which can measure width of a magnetic tape or straightness of side edge of the magnetic tape highly accurately and can cope with a magnetic tape of a small width and a high signal recording density for high-density recording.
CONSTITUTION: A magnetic tape T is linearly held by a pair of holders 2 and 3 set on a base 1. A predetermined tension is impressed to the magnetic tape T by a tension mechanism 7. A guide 4 is arranged in parallel to the magnetic tape T. A measuring stage 5 is guided and supported by this guide 4 to be slidable. A length-measuring device 6 of a laser type is mounted on the measuring stage 5. The measuring stage 5 is reciprocated by a driving mechanism and the width is measured every predetermined feed pitch. The length-measuring device 6 comprises a light-emitting device 6a scanning/oscillating a laser light in a widthwise direction of the tape and a photodetecting device 6b detecting the laser light.
