To provide an apparatus and a method capable of correctly detecting deposited metals in a melting furnace of any form even in a relatively simple structure.
A fixed electrode 9 set at a bottom face 8 of a melting furnace, a movable electrode 11 that can be moved up and down by a lift means 10 to be inserted in the melting furnace, a detecting means 13 detecting a connection state between the fixed electrode 9 and movable electrode 11, and a measuring means 14 measuring a position of the moved movable electrode 11, are provided. The movable electrode 11 is descended by the lift means 10 and inserted in the melting furnace. While the position of the moved movable electrode 11 is measured by the measuring means 14, the connection state between the fixed electrode 9 and movable electrode 11 is detected by the detecting means 13, so that a deposit T is detected.
