In a fabricating method and a fabricating apparatus of a magnetic recording medium, a web 50 supplied from a supply roll is transported by rolls 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, and guided to a cutting shear 40. The web 50 is cut in a longitudinal direction thereof by the cutting shear 40 to fabricate a plurality of magnetic recording media 53. Immediately prior to the cutting of the web 50, supplied from the supply roll, into predetermined widths by the cutting shear 40, the web 50 is preparatorily cut to be divided into a plurality of portions in its longitudinal direction, thereby applying uniform tension thereto.
