To provide an apparatus and a method for inspecting character chipping which can obtain a high inspection performance by a simple constitution.

The apparatus for inspecting character chipping is equipped with an imaging means for imaging a variable printing region where a printing data image is printed and obtaining an inspection object printing image, a product image generating means for generating a product image which has a value obtained by multiplying pixel values of corresponding pixels between the printing data image and the inspection object printing image as a pixel value of the corresponding pixel, and a difference image generating means for generating a difference image which has a value obtained by subtracting pixel values of corresponding pixels of the product image and the printing data image as a pixel value of the corresponding pixel. The method is applied to the apparatus.
