To provide an apparatus and a method for manufacturing an endless metal ring with a superior durability, which is related to a transmission belt of a belt-type continuously variable transmission for a vehicle using an endless metal ring.

The apparatus for manufacturing an endless metal ring includes: a retaining roller disposed on an inner peripheral side of the endless metal ring; a retaining roller movement means operable to move the retaining roller between a position where a tensile force is applied to the endless metal ring by the retaining roller, and a position where the tensile force is not applied to; an outer peripheral side roller disposed on an outer peripheral side of the endless metal ring; an outer peripheral side roller movement means operable to move the outer peripheral side roller between a position where the outer peripheral side roller presses the endless metal ring from an outer peripheral side, and a position where the outer peripheral side roller does not press the endless metal ring; and a control unit for controlling the outer peripheral side roller movement means to move the outer peripheral side roller to the position where the outer peripheral side roller does not press the endless metal ring, and then controlling the retaining roller movement means to move the retaining roller to the position where the retaining roller does not apply a tensile force to the endless metal ring.
