To provide a method for sterilizing ballast water which can thoroughly exert high-density cavitation action to the whole amount of ballast water, completely treat the whole amount of the ballast water, and crushes the cell of a harmful living organism such as an organic microbe/bacterium in the ballast water to completely eradicate it.
An apparatus for sterilizing the ballast water includes a ballast water introduction device 5 connected to the ballast tank 3 of the hull 2 and continuously introducing the ballast water 4 from the ballast tank, and a high-frequency oscillatory device 6 generating a cavitation foam in the introduced ballast water and crushing the harmful living organism such as the organic microbe/bacterium in the ballast water by an impulse wave generated when the cavitation foam is collapsed to eradicate it. The high-frequency oscillatory device comprises a high-frequency oscillation generator 13 for generating a high-frequency oscillation, a horn 14 for the high-frequency oscillation connected to this high-frequency oscillation generator, and an opposed part 15 holding a narrow space at the tip end face of this horn to face it, wherein at the opposed part, a ballast water injecting nozzle 16 having a smaller aperture than the diameter of the tip end face of the horn is opened toward the tip end face of the horn 14.
