PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for treating a mercury-containing material stably cooling a mercury-removed material obtained by volatilizing and removing mercury from the mercury-containing material at a low cost and in a short time.SOLUTION: An apparatus 1 for treating a mercury-containing material includes: an external heat kiln 4 volatilizing mercury contained in mercury-containing dust D3 by heating the mercury-containing dust D3; an activated carbon adsorption tower 7 recovering mercury from a mercury-containing gas G2 exhausted from the external heat kiln 4; and a mixing cooling device 8 cooling mercury-removed dust D4 discharged from the external heat kiln 4 while being mixed with cooling dust D5. A mixing device mixing the mercury-removed dust D4 and the cooling dust D5 and a cooling device cooling a mixture discharged from the mixing device may be used instead of the mixing cooling device 8. A hydrous material can be used as the cooling dust D5. A mixture M cooled in the mixing cooling device 8 and the like can be used as a cement raw material. The cooling dust D5 having a particle diameter of φ0.1-φ5 mm can be used.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
