PURPOSE: To produce fluorescent pigments and aqueous dispersions of fluorescent pigments having an average particle size less than 10 μm, preferably less than 1 μm useful for cloth printing ink, gravure printing ink, fluorescent paint or the like without employing a pulverizing process.
CONSTITUTION: Fluorescent pigment compositions comprise about 40 to 78.5% of a water-insoluble vinyl monomer free of polar groups to total polymer wt. about 5 to 35% of a vinyl nitrile to total polymer wt. about 1.5 to 5% of a vinyl monomer containing sulfonate groups to total polymer wt. about 5 to 20% of a polar vinyl monomer selected from the group consisting of: polar acrylic esters, polar methacrylic esters, vinyl acetate and a substituted acrylamide containing hydroxyl or carboxylic ester groups to total polymer wt., and an enough quantity of fluorescent dyes to impart fluorescent color to pigments.
