To produce an aqueous emulsion composition having a high low- temperature fluidity and a high initial adhesion by carrying out emulsion polymerization under excellent polymerization stability.
This aqueous emulsion composition is produced by subjecting a water-soluble polymer (e.g. a polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of saponification of 88-99mol%) to an activation treatment in an aqueous medium and subsequently carrying out emulsion polymerization of a vinyl ester monomer such as vinyl acetate. The activation treatment includes irradiation with active rays and treatment with active oxygen or a water-soluble peroxide, etc. A plasticizer, etc., is optionally added to the aqueous emulsion composition. Thus obtained aqueous emulsion composition is excellent in low-temperature fluidity, and the flow time of the aqueous emulsion determined by the following condition is less than 30sec: 15g of an aqueous emulsion composition having an solid concentration of 55wt.% is placed in a test tube (inner diameter of 0.5mm and length of 180mm); the test tube is tilted by 45 degree from the horizontal plane; and the flow time is measured at 5°C. The aqueous emulsion composition is excellent in stability and initial adhesion, and accordingly it can be used as an adhesive for paper, etc.
