In this aqueous ink set for ink jet recording containing an aqueous black ink and an aqueous magenta ink, the aqueous black ink contains a black colorant, water, and a water-soluble organic solvent, wherein the black colorant contains self-dispersible carbon black; and the aqueous magenta ink contains a magenta colorant, water, and a water-soluble organic solvent, wherein the magenta colorant contains a specific anthrapyridone dye, and the water-soluble organic solvent contains a penetrant, and the blending amount of the penetrant is 0.5-3.5 wt.% to the total amount of the magenta ink.
