To obtain a new compound useful for production of a thermoplastic polyimide, in which 3-aminophenoxy group and 3-aminobenzoyl group are respectively substituted at 4-position and 4'-position, having heat resistance which is characteristic to polyimide as well as excellent moldability and processability and being substantially amorphous.
This compound is represented by formula I (X is a direct bond, O or S; R1 to R4 are each H or methyl), e.g. 4-(3-aminophenoxy)-4'-(3- aminobenzoyl)-1,1'-biphenyl. The compound of formula I is obtained by condensing a phenol of formula II with m-dinitrobenzene in the presence of a base in a aprotic polar solvent, subjecting the resultant aromatic nitro compound to Friedel-Crafts reaction with m-nitrobenzoic acid chloride and reducing the resultant aromatic dinitro compound of formula III. Bechamp reduction is preferable as a method for reducing the compound of formula III and 50 to 200°C is preferable as the reaction temperature.
