To provide a polymer electrolyte which shows excellent characteristics as a proton conductive membrane of a fuel cell or the like.
(1) A polymer electrolyte membrane obtained by uniaxially or biaxially drawing or rolling a membrane prepared by using a polymer electrolyte containing, as an active constituent, an aromatic polymer characterized by having a superacid group in a side chain is provided. (2) A polymer electrolyte membrane of (1) characterized in that the aromatic polymer is represented by general formula (1): 1(A-Z)m-(A'-Z')n- is provided. (3) The fuel cell characterized by using the polymer electrolyte membrane of (1) or (2) is provided. In the formula, A is a bivalent aromatic group; A' is a bivalent aromatic group with the superacid group substituted; Z and Z' are each independently a direct bond or bivalent aromatic group; and m and n are each the number of repeating units.
