PURPOSE: To obtain an aromatic polymer desirable for surface coating materials and composite materials such as laminates of glass fibers by reacting a polymer comprising aromatic ether-bond-containing units and specified heterocyclic ring units with an haloalkylating agent.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic-unit-containing polymer represented by formula I (wherein Rh1 is phenylene; Rh is p-phenylene; A is CO2 or the like) or represented by formulas I and formula II (wherein B is CO or the like) is dissolved in a solvent (e.g. 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane), the obtained solution is reacted with a haloalkylating agent (e.g. chloromethoxy-4-chlorobutane) in the presence of optionally a Broensted acid (e.g. trifluoromethanesulfonic acid) to obtain the objective polymer.
