To strictly manage an article in response to its entry into and exit from a prescribed region.SOLUTION: An article management system 1 comprises: a movement management unit (a card reader 2 and a management computer 4) which manages, in accordance with an operation of an operator, at least one of his or her entry into a prescribed region and his or her exit from the prescribed region; and an article management unit (article management device 3) which has a preservation unit 31 preserving an article therein and manages his or her putting the article in the preservation unit or his or her taking out the article from the preservation unit in accordance with his or her operation. On the basis of an operation state of the movement management unit and an operation state of the article management unit, specific processing is not performed when the movement management unit is operated and the article management unit is operated as well, and the specific processing is not performed when the movement management unit is operated but the article management unit is not operated.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
