A sheetlike article, which is impregnated or coated with a liquid polymeric compound of which the coagulation point exceeds that of water, a gel like material prepared by mixing the liquid polymeric compound with a fine powder or the liquid polymeric compound of which the coagulation point exceeds that of water, is used as a means for protecting the surface of the article to cover the surface to be protected of the article. The liquid polymeric compound is frozen by cooling to form a protective film or layer and, when protection becomes unnecessary, the protective film or layer is raised in temperature to be thawn.
