To provide a method for producing an artificial erythrocyte with which the artificial erythrocyte is produced under mild conditions and even deterioration of hemoglobin is prevented and to provide the artificial erythrocyte produced by the method.

The artificial erythrocyte is obtained as follows. A visible light-crosslinkable substance such as an eosinized gelatin, a hydrogen donor such as a reducing sugar and hemoglobin are added to a lipophilic liquid and dispersed. The resultant dispersion is then irradiated with visible light to photo-crosslink and gel the dispersed particles. Thereby, the artificial erythrocyte composed of the gelled particles is prepared.
