Abstract:
To provide artificial sand in the foundry industry formed by a melt air-granulation method serving as foundry sand with high grain strength that can be used semi-permanently without being crushed by stress received in a foundry process.SOLUTION: The grain strength of ceramic artificial sand is increased by controlling macroscopic internal pore defects and microscopic structural heterogeneity, which dominate fractures of the ceramic artificial sand. The artificial sand with composition of an SiO2-Al2O3 based equilibrium diagram with the primary crystal being mullite is controlled macroscopically such that the number of grains including pore defects of 10 μm or more in the cross section of the artificial sand is 25% or less, and microscopically such that the matrix has no recognizable grain boundary and no recognizable gap of 1 μm or more.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
