NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I [A is CH or H; X and Y are H, Cl, trifluoromethyl or methoxy with the proviso that X and Y are not H at the same time; X1 is phenyl, benzyl or furfuryl; R2 is H or lower alkyl; R3 is H or group shown by formula II (R4 is lower alkyl)].
EXAMPLE: 3-(3,5-Dichlorophenoxy)-1-methyl-1-phenylurea.
USE: A herbicide effective against weeds of paddy field such as barnyard millet, umbrella plant or bulrush and weeds of plowed field such as large crab-grass, common lamb's-quarters or posumbu knotweed, not imparting phytotoxicity to crops.
PREPARATION: An aryloxyamine shown by formula III is reacted with a carbamic acid chloride shown by formula IV (R2' is lower alkyl) in the presence of a base (e.g., pyridine) at 0W100°C to give a compound shown by formula I. An inert solvent such as benzene is used as a solvent.
