To easily manufacture a light weight combined cam shaft by establishing a permanent connection for fixing each element to an axial and radial orientation necessary on a shaft at a superposed portion of a cam, a hub of journal element and a hub of shaft.
A cam element 30 has an outer wall 33, a cylindrical hub 31 and a web 32 connecting the outer wall 33 and the hub 31. The cylindrical hub 31 is dimension-set such that it imparts a slide fit just fitted to a shaft 20 and is disposed on the shaft at a necessary axial and radial orientation determined by an application to a target machine. Next, a calking tool 40 is applied to the hub 31 in order to permanently connect the hub 31 and the shaft 20 to one form. This prevents an element from being axially and radially displaced during a cam operation in the machine or an engine. The calking is a suitable method for establishing a connection.
