PURPOSE: To realize the lightness of weight of a return spring by housing the front part return spring, urging a front part piston in a retracting direction, in a front part brake fluid pressure chamber and providing a rear part return spring to be compressed between a cylinder main unit and a rear part piston in order to urge it in a retracting direction.
CONSTITUTION: In a tandem type master cylinder, the inside of a stepped cylinder hole 3 of a cylinder main unit 1 is divided into front and rear part brake fluid pressure chambers 51, 52 by a front part piston 4. The cylinder main unit 1 connects to its rear end part a fluid pressure booster B, and slidably fitting to its cylinder hole 24 a booster piston 27, a rear part piston 29 is slidably fitted to a stepped cylinder hole formed in said piston 27. Here a stopper ring 8, restricting the retracting limit of the front part piston 4, is stopped to a rear end part internal wall in a small size hole 3a, and a front part return spring 9, urging the front part piston 4 toward the retracting limit, is contractibly provided in the front part brake fluid pressure chamber 51. While a rear part return spring 30, urging this rear part piston 29 in the retracting direction, is arranged between the stopper ring 8 and the rear part piston 29.
