PURPOSE: To obtain an optically active epoxy compd. as the material for the medicine, agricultural chemical, liq. crystal, dye, intermediate of a functional polymer, optical resolution agent, etc., by oxidizing an olefin with an oxide in the presence of a specified asymmetric oxidation catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An asymmetric oxidation catalyst shown by formula I (R is a binaphthylene group shown by formula II and having axial asymmetry and all of four have the same configuration, and X is a counter anion) is prepared. An olefin compound shown by formula III (Ar is an aromatic group capable of forming a cyclic structure, and R2, R2 and R3 are respectively H or an alkyl group capable of forming a cyclic structure with a straight or branched-chain aromatic group or the group shown by the Ar in the formula) is oxidized with an oxidizing agent (e.g. an iodosylbenzene capable of having a substituent) in the presence of an asymmetric oxidation catalyst to produce an optically active epoxy compd. shown by formula IV.
