To obtain a stainless steel excellent in stress corrosion cracking resistance by forming the austenitic phase, in an austentic stainless steel having a specific composition in which respective contents of Ni and Cr are specified, into single-crystal structure.
A stainless steel, having a composition consisting of, by weight, ≤0.2% C, ≤0.5% N, ≤1% Si, ≤0.040% P, ≤0.030% S, ≤2.0% Mn, 9-21% Ni, 15-26% Cr, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and also having an austenitic single phase or an austenitic single phase and a 10vol.% ferritic phase at room temp. At this time, cold working or warm working is applied, in succession to solution heat treatment, to the stainless steel for the enlargement or lengthening of size, and the resultant strain is recovered by means of a temp. not higher than the recrystallization temp. to provide the austentic phase with single crystallinity. By this method, the austenitic stainless steel, excellent in corrosion resistance and strength and having a size enlarged or lengthened to a greater extent, can be obtained.
