Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a collision when attaching a vehicle to a trailer, direct a path of the vehicle and provide efficient instructions.SOLUTION: A hitching assist system for a vehicle comprises a camera mounted to view a reverse traveling path of the vehicle, an input device, and a controller. The controller includes instructions for detecting a trailer proximate to the vehicle with the camera, specifying the location of a vehicle hitch ball, specifying the location of a trailer hitch, and calculating a vehicle path from an initial position to a final position where the vehicle hitch ball is aligned in the horizontal direction with the trailer hitch. The controller further includes instructions for calculating steering and braking maneuvers necessary to move the vehicle along the path to the final position and sending instructions to a vehicle steering system and a vehicle brake system to perform each of the calculated maneuvers.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
