Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ice detection system capable of differentiating between a normal icing condition and a supercooled large drop icing condition.SOLUTION: An embodiment comprises a sensor system 206 and an icing condition detector 208. The sensor system is configured to collect drops of water 222 from air on an exterior of an aircraft 202 and generate a number of images 224 of the drops of water collected. The icing condition detector is configured to detect the presence of a number of types of icing conditions for the aircraft using the number of images from the sensor.
