PURPOSE: To generate an arc without causing penetration of an electrode, by contacting the electrode with a base material, detaching the electrode from the base material by detecting a voltage variation of its moment, and stopping the electrode when arc voltage to be a constant value after the arc is generated.
CONSTITUTION: A signal is outputted from an AND circuit 18, a torch mechanism 5 is operated by receving a signal from an output amplifying circuit 19, and when an electrode 3 approaches a base material and contacts with it, an electric current flowing from a welding power source 1 is detected, and an output signal of the AND circuit 18 is eliminated. On the other hand, a signal is outputted from an AND circuit 14, a torch driving mechanism 5 is operated in the opposite direction, the electrode 3 is suddenly detached from the base material 4, an arc is generated during that time, and the arc voltage rises. When the voltage exceeds an output voltage of an initial arc voltage setting circuit 8, an output voltage of a comparing circuit 9 is eliminated, no signal is outputted from the AND circuit 14, and the electrode 3 remains stopped. By said operation, the arc is generated automatically between the electrode 3 and the base material 4.
