Abstract:
PURPOSE: To execute automatic braking early enough to surely avoid contact in the case where a preceding vehicle is in an undesirable travelling state such as sudden deceleration and meandering, by detecting this state to change a threshold value for the possibility of contact into a larger one.
CONSTITUTION: The automatic braking device computes a distance between an obstacle such as a preceding vehicle or the like and own car and relative speed based on the output of an ultrasonic radar unit 31 provided on the front part of a car body through a computing unit 32, and when it is judged from the computed result that own car has possibility to come into contact with the obstacle, an actuator 16 executes automatic braking to brake each wheel. In this case, the computing unit 32 judges whether the preceding car is in the undesirable state of sudden deceleration or not from the outputs of a car speed sensor 42 and of a distance-relative speed detecting means 36, and when the preceding vehicle is judged to be in the undesirable state, a threshold value for the start of the automatic braking is changed to be larger than that in the other cases. Thus the automatic braking is executed early enough to surely avoid the contact.
