PURPOSE: To shorten first copy time by computing a document size (length) from the rear end position of a bundle of documents set on a document loading base.
CONSTITUTION: A movable detection unit 34 is provided on a document loading base 31A in the direction of conveying a document on the document loading base 31A. The detection unit 34 has a home position at the upstream side end of the document loading base 31A and when a bundle of documents are set on the document loading base 31A, it is moved from the home position. When a detection lever 39 runs against the rear side of the bundle of documents and is rotated about a support shaft 42 in the counterclockwise direction, light emitted from the light emission part of a photo-interruptor 38 is shaded. That position, namely, the position where the photo-interruptor 38 detects the rear end of the bundle of documents is converted into an electric resistance value by a slide volume 49 to compute a document size (length) from the electric resistance value.
