To determine whether a photographic film is of less than ISO800 once the photographic film is loaded in a camera and to simplify a structure for determining the film speed.
A film speed detecting mechanism 30 presses electric contacts 34, 36, and 38 against code areas E2, E3, and E4 of a CAS code part 26, respectively, and only when at least one of the 2nd code area E2 and 3rd code area E3 is a conduction area and the 4th code area E4 is also a conduction area, the mechanism turns on an actuator 40 by supplying a DC current in photographing by a DC power source 52 to hold a stop mechanism 42 at an H level matching high film speeds. In other cases, the current supply by the DC power source 52 is stopped in photographing to turn off the actuator 40 and thus the stop mechanism 42 is held at an L level matching low film speeds.
