PURPOSE: To exactly and stably perform an automatic focus adjustment by determining a driving direction when the calculated driving direction of a focus lens matches with plural focus signals having different frequency components which are simultaneously extracted.
CONSTITUTION: Different frequency components are extracted from video signals by BPF 113 and 801, and sharpness signals are generated by each of AF processing circuits 114 and 802. At this point, the BPF 113 shows a steep chevron characteristic around a focusing point and the BPF 801 shows a gentle chevron characteristic. From the change of the signal level determined by calculating the change of the level of each output signal of the BPF in an AF control microcomputer 107 when a wobbling is performed by driving focus lenses 1, 2, 3 and 4 in this order, in which direction of a close side and a indefinte side the focusing point exists is decided, and when the directions of the both output signals are matched, the direction is determined and a focusing operation is performed. Thus, the direction decision becomes possible surely and with high accuracy and an automatic focus adjustment can be exactly and stably performed without a malfunction.
