PURPOSE: To obtain focusing state in a short time with high accuracy by taking a high frequency component of a luminance signal in a focus area as a focus evaluation value and using a charge other than the charge of a line as an invalid charge.
CONSTITUTION: With a release SW 21 depressed, a microcomputer 22 turns on a power supply, photometry is applied by a photometry circuit 25 using a photodiode and a microcomputer 26 decides proper aperture and shutter speed. Then an automatic focus circuit 30 applies focusing and a timing generator 27 is used for the drive system for detecting a focus evaluation value. During the focusing, a 1st drive system requires charges at 1/5 in the middle of the focus area picture in the vertical direction and the charges of 2/5 of the upper and lower parts are not required and swept out, and after the end of focusing with high accuracy is finished, a general 2nd drive system is adopted to obtain focusing in a short time.
