PURPOSE: To make automatic inspection of a lens by irradiating a picture element array with a beam of light which has penetrated the lens, converting the intensity of the beam of light on the picture element into a signal, and subjecting the obtained signal to a processing.
CONSTITUTION: An inspection system concerned 10 is composed of sub-systems for transporting 12, illuminating 14, turning into image 16, and also turning into image 20. The transporting sub-system 12 carries a number of ophthalmic lenses along a prescribed path one by one to the inspecting position 80. The illuminating sub-system 14 leads the parallel beams of light 82 given by a light source 30 to a lens 80 through mirrors 32, 34 and put the light incident onto the sub-system 16. The sub-system 16 image-picked up the light having penetrated the lens 80 by a CCD camera 36 through a stop 40 and generates an electric signal complying with the photo-intensity in an image array. At this time, normal beams of light are blocked by the stop 40, while the beams with abnormality are solely put on picture element array where image formation is made. The electric signals are digital converted by a preprocessing device 62 and stored in memory, and a main processing device 64 performs such processings according to the given program, as eccentricity test, edge detection, gap detection, or the like, and thereupon the acceptability of each lens concerned is judged.
