To realize an automatic meter reading system capable of carrying out the operation management of individual fixed terminals reliably by securing use for a long period in terms of the life of a battery and being proper for automatic meter reading at an optional timing.

The automatic meter reading system is provided with a fixed terminal 10 for automatic meter reading which transmits meter reading data of an instrument to be meter-read in response to a reading request from a portable terminal for automatic meter reading, and a portable terminal 30 for automatic meter reading which gives the reading request of the meter reading data of the instrument to be meter-read to the fixed terminal for automatic meter reading and receives the meter reading data of the instrument to be meter-read from the fixed terminal for automatic meter reading. The portable terminal for automatic meter reading is provided with a storage means 32 for storing the received meter reading data, an operation part 33 to which the meter reading value data are to be inputted when the data cannot be received from the fixed terminal for automatic meter reading, and a control means 31 for storing the inputted meter reading data added with a prescribed flag into the storage means when the meter reading data are inputted from the operation part.
