To provide an automatic orientation method of a stereo base line capable of recognizing a mark automatically even if an initial mutual orientation coefficient is changed by an influence of a temperature change, an external pressure (wind), vibration or the like, and determining automatically a new mutual orientation coefficient.
In a determination method of the mutual orientation coefficient by a fixed base line device, special marks Ai (Aai, Abi) for automatic recognition to be mentioned later installed at first near a measuring object are oriented manually, to determine a basic model coordinate system (Xm, Ym, Zm). Then, the special marks Ai which are marks to be mentioned later are recognized on right and left stereo images (Ba, Bb) automatically at any and every time when photographing by a computer, and combination of the right and left same points on the recognized special marks Ai is performed. Mutual orientation is performed by using coordinates of the observed special marks, and a mechanism is used, for replacing automatically a mutual orientation coefficient value when a longitudinal parallax standard deviation of the determined mutual orientation coefficient is smaller than a longitudinal parallax standard deviation of a model determined in the preceding step, and thereby measurement accuracy can be maintained even if the orientation is not performed manually.
