The automatic presetting device for a shaft-like tool detects the forefront position of the cutting edge forefront 2c of the shaft-like tool 2 set on a setting table 11, determines the reference position α of the cutting edge forefront of the set shaft-like tool 2 on the basis of the dimensional information of the shaft-like tool selected by input operation among the dimensional information set previously, and measures the actual preset length from the reference position α to the reference position of a holder 3, whereupon the actual preset length is adopted as the setting preset length of the shaft-like tool selected by the input operation.
