PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which can be constituted compact in size in an axial direction.SOLUTION: An automatic transmission 1 comprises: a friction plate set 81 in which a fixed-side friction plate 81a and a rotation-side friction plate 81b are alternately arranged; pistons 85, 86; a brake device 80 having hydraulic chambers 92, 89 to which hydraulic pressure for moving the pistons 85, 86 to the friction plate set side is supplied; a first rotating member 62; and second and third rotating members 42, 72 which are arranged at both sides of the first rotating member 62 in an axial direction, and have outside diameters smaller than an outside diameter of the first rotating member 62. The friction plate set 80 and the hydraulic chambers 92, 89 are arranged at external peripheral sides of the second and third rotating members 42, 72 at both the sides of the first rotating member 62 in the axial direction, and the pistons 85, 86 are extended to the friction plate set side while passing an external peripheral side of the first rotating member 62 from the hydraulic chambers 92, 89.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
