PURPOSE: To realize an automatic grinding machine for a wide variety of works with limited quantities while maintaining the operating accuracy by arranging a work head movable right and left and a wheel head rotatable horizontally and movable forward and backward to oppose to each other on a bed and by controlling the movement and angle of rotation of them.

CONSTITUTION: When the start switch of an automatic shperical surface grinding machine 1 is depressed, a work spindle 6 and a work head 7 installed on a bed 2 move toward a wheel head 12 equipped with a wheel spindle 11 through actuators 3, 4, 5, and the work spindle 6 catching a work W rotates at a certain rotating speed. On the other hand, also the wheel spindle 11 attached with a grindstone rotates through an actuator 10 at a certain rotating speed, and further the wheel head 12 turns through actuators 8, 9 and approaches and performs the rough grinding-finish grinding-spark out of the work W by use of the grindstone in accordance with the concave or convex machining requirements; thus the machining to meet the set requirements can be finished. In this way, it is possible to automate the machining process for a wide variety of works with limited quantities maintaining the existing precision.
