To provide a low-cost automatic tensioner in which a reduction in damper performance due to air incorporation does not occur and consequently a stable spring load is ensured irrespective of the position of the plunger.
The automatic tensioner 1 having a cylinder 9 whose one end is open and whose other end is closed, a plunger 10 axially slidably inserted to the cylinder 9, a return spring built in the cylinder 9 to energize the plunger 10 in such a direction that it projects from the cylinder 9 in order to absorb the tensional change of a timing chain 6 by the axial movement of the plunger 10 uses as a return spring a ring spring 11 formed by stacking an inner ring 16 having a taper surface 15 on its outer circumference and an outer ring 18 having a taper surface 17 on its inner circumference and includes a coil spring 12 disposed penetrating the ring spring 11. The coil spring 12 is supported at its one end by the closed end of the cylinder 9 and presses the plunger 10 at its other end.
