PURPOSE: To enable the compaction of the whole shape without lowering efficiency by making the sectional form of the element wire of a torsion spring placed between a tension shaft and a tension arm square.
CONSTITUTION: A torsion spring 6 is compressedly inserted in a space formed between the locked part 8 of a tension arm 3 and the spring bearing part 12 of a fitting member 4. The spring 6 is square in the sectional form of its element wire, and rectangular to be more concrete. This spring 6 with the rectangular cross section is inserted concentrically with the boss part of the tension arm 3 and both end parts are brought into contact with the protrusions 10, 16 of the tension arm 3 and the fitting member 4. In addition, an automatic tensioner 1 is fixed at the other member 10 by a bolt 17 inserted in the slotted hole of the fitting member 4 and put to use by bringing an idler pulley 2 into contact with the rear face of a belt. That is to say, the spring 6 is wound in the fastening direction at the time of normal running and in the loosening direction at the tension operating time of the belt.
