PURPOSE: To prevent the generation of gear noise and vibration or the like by controlling a gear to be switched of speed change in an automatic transmission to a high speed condition when the automatic transmission is judged to be in a neutral gear select condition and when a running speed is judged to be changed from a low speed side to a high speed side.
CONSTITUTION: While an automatic transmission 3 is selected in its forward reverse gear shift to a neutral condition, a forklift performs coast running as in down a slope, when a running speed reaches a predetermined high speed, in order to once disconnect a dry single-disk clutch 2, a clutch controlling actuator 6 is driven and controlled. When the clutch 2 is once disconnected, a speed change selecting actuator 7 is driven and controlled for switching a speed change gear of the automatic transmission 3 from 1-speed in a low speed side to 2-speed in a high speed side. Further when the automatic transmission 3 is selected in its speed change shift to a 2-speed condition, the clutch 2 is again connected. Consequently, an unreasonable burden by a sudden engine brake is prevented from being applied.
