The autosampler includes a rack 3 with the vial 3b arranged; a needle mechanism 61 containing a needle 4, a driving unit 62 for driving the needle mechanism 61 vertically; a suspension member 63 suspended from the needle mechanism 61 under its own weight, containing a structure that contacts the vial or a foreign material earlier than the distal end of the needle 4 when moving the needle mechanism 61 downwards under the suspended state; a position detection means 64 for detecting the positions of the suspension member 63 and the needle mechanism 61; and a material detection unit 110 for detecting the vial 3b or the foreign material, based on the positions of the suspension member 63 and the needle mechanism 61.
