Title:
AXIAL ALIGNING METHOD OF OPTICAL FIBER CORES
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5926711
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To align the axes of optical fiber cores with high accuracy and to connect the fiber cores by melt sticking at a low loss by making light incident from the core of the other optical fiber to the clad of the optical fiber placed oppositely thereto and detecting the state in which the quantity of the leaking light is minimum.

CONSTITUTION: The light from an LED or the like is made incident through the core 3 of an optical fiber which is slightly moved in the direction intersecting with the optical axis to the clad layer 2' of the optical fiber placed opposite thereto apart at a prescribed spacing. Part of the incident light has a leaky mode and the light of higher order mode is leaked easily to the outside of the optical fiber owing to the nonuniformity at the boundary face between the layer 2' and the covering layer 1', microbending, etc. If the leaking light 11 is detected with a photodetector 9, and the slight moving position of the optical fiber is controlled to minimize the quantity of the detected light, the axes of the cores 3 and 3' are easily aligned with high accuracy and the optical fibers are connected by melt sticking at a low loss.
