This azo compound of formula (1) (R1 is an aliphatic group or an aromatic group; R2 to R5 are each H, a halogen, an aliphatic group, an aromatic group, an aliphatic oxy group, an aromatic oxy group, an aliphatic thio group, an aromatic thio group, an aliphatic sulfonyl group, an aromatic sulfonyl group, or -N=N-Cp, provided that at least one of R2 to R5 is -N=N-Cp; Cp is a coupler residue). This method for producing the azo compound of formula (1) comprises reacting a diazo compound of formula (4) (R2 to R5 are each the same group as those of formula (1) or -N2+X-, provided that at least one of R2 to R5 is -N2+X-, X- is an anion) with a coupler.
