To provide a material that has excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal materials and nematic liquid crystallinity while achieving a high Δn and a liquid crystal composition comprising the material as a constituent member.
The azobenzene derivative (e.g., 4-(2,6-difluoro-4-propylphenylethynyl)-4'-ethylazobenzene) is represented by general formula (1). The liquid crystal composition comprises the same. The display element uses the liquid crystal composition. Since the azobenzene derivative has a high refractive index anisotropy and high compatibility with other liquid crystal compositions and nematic liquid crystallinity, the display element using the azobenzene derivative is useful as a liquid crystal display element for vertical alignment method, IPS, etc., especially as a cholesteric liquid crystal display element.
