PURPOSE: To provide the subject new compounds showing an antagonistic effect specific to prostaglandin endoperoxides and thromboxane A2 and useful for improving various kinds of diseases such as cerebral embolism caused by these arachidonic acid metabolites.
CONSTITUTION: Compounds of formula I (R is -COOH, -SO3H, etc.; n is 1-6; A is -SO2NH-, -CO-NHSO2-, etc.; B is H or halogen) or salts thereof, e.g. 6- isopropyl-3-[3-phenylaminosulfonyl)propyl]-azulene-1-carboxylic acid. The above- mentioned compound, in the case of A=-SO2NH- and R=-COOR2, is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II (R1 is lower alkyl; X is halogen) with a compound of formula III. In addition, the compound of formula II can be obtained, e.g. by halogenating the corresponding sulfonic acid salt by a halogenation agent such as thionyl chloride.
