To suppress a white level distortion or a whitening of picture due to amplification while amplifying pixel values of a main object having low and medium luminance, as backlight correction of picture.
In solving the above-mentioned problem, the backlight correction unit is provided with: a pixel feature quantity extracting means for inputting value of pixel constituting color image and outputting pixel feature quantity; an amplification value outputting means for inputting the above-mentioned pixel feature quantity and outputting the amplification value; and a pixel value amplification means for outputting the pixel value amplified based on the above-mentioned amplification value and the pixel value. The above-mentioned amplification value outputting means has means for outputting the amplification value so that the pixel feature quantity after amplification becomes first monotone increasing function of the pixel feature quantity before amplification, for outputting a small amplification value to large pixel feature quantity, and for outputting a large amplification value to small to medium pixel feature quantity. The backlight correction unit has the pixel feature quantity extracting means using brightness of a pixel as the feature quantity.
