The backlight device includes a light source, a light guide plate, a beam control section, and a directivity control element. In the light guide plate, a plurality of diffusion parts that diffuse light from the light source are formed. The beam control section emits a plurality of linear beams. The directivity control element has a plurality of optical openings. The optical openings extend in a second direction and are arranged plurally in a first direction perpendicular to the second direction. The beam control section emits linear beams extending in a third direction which tilts to the second direction. In the light guard plate, a first region in which a diffusion part is formed in the third direction and a second region in which a diffusion part is not formed are alternately arranged in the first direction.
