PURPOSE: To provide a baked pencil lead in which strength, density and writing performance are provided in balance and a method for manufacturing the same in a pencil lead such as for a wood pencil or a mechanical pencil.

CONSTITUTION: In a method for manufacturing a pencil lead comprising the steps of adding and kneading graphite, body material such as carbon black, bonding material such as clay, natural polymer, pitch, asphalt as main materials, as required solvent and/or plasticizer, extrusion molding the mixture, and baking it at a high temperature, wherein ultra-thin graphite having mean particle size of 0.5 to 10.0μm, thickness of 0.7μm or less, specific surface area of 10 to 200m2/g is used as the part of at least the body material. Thus, the lead having a bulk density of 1.38 to 1.62g/cm3 is obtained.
