To realize effective treatment of a large amount of ballast water at a remarkably low cost in comparison with the conventional method, by using a method for efficiently generating shock waves by underwater spark discharge using pulse power, which is large electric power having a very narrow pulse width to kill aquatic microorganisms contained in the ballast water.
The ballast water treatment method comprises a pulse power generating part (4) for generating pulse power of large electric power having a very narrow pulse width, and a shock wave generating part (13) for generating the shock waves (6) by spark discharge (5) of a pulse generated in the pulse power generating part (4) between high voltage electrodes (3) in the ballast water (2). The aquatic microorganisms contained in the ballast water (2) are killed by the generated shock waves (6) to clean the ballast water.
