PURPOSE: To reduce the manufacturing costs and enhance the stiffness and hardness compatibly by feeding molten high-speed steel to a pair of rolls rotating oppositely, solidifying quickly, and forming an irregular cutting edge shape at th edge part stretching longitudinally.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy element or elements such as C, Cr, Mo, W, V, Co, Ni are added to Fe, and the resultant is melted by vacuum melting method to produce a molten high-speed steel 5, which is supplied out of a nozzle 4 while a pressure roll 2 and a stationary roll 3 are rotated inward. The molten steel 5 forms a stagnant and solidifies in rapid cooling at the contact part with the two rolls 2, 3 to undergo a rolling process between the rolls. Thus a rapid cooled thin band 6 is formed, wherein an irregular cutting edge shape 6a is formed at its edge part stretching longitudinally, wherein the tip of the shape 6a has a smaller thickness than the central part, and cutting is made into specified lengths. Thus a band saw element is fabricated. The thin band 6 contains carbides, which are crystallized in particulates having sizes below several μms and are dispersed uniformly, and is embodied in a structure with super rapid cooled solidification, being provided with a high hardness while stiffness is enhanced. The irregular cutting edge shape can be used as a machining cutter, which does not require teeth setting.
